Catania signs "malaka"

Italian club Catania have confirmed the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Jorge “Malaka” Martinez from Nacional of Montevideo.

Martinez (24) will arrive in Italy on Monday, and will be officially presented as the new player of the club the following day at the President Park Hotel di Acicastello.

The Uruguayan midfielder is known for his outstanding skill, his tremendous technique, and powerful shot. Martinez is likely to be a key player as Catania looks to improve on last season’s showing.

Last season he was one of Nacional’s most influential players in their Copa Libertadores campaign where they reached the quarterfinals. Martinez scored Nacional’s vital goal in the 1-0 victory over Mexican side Necaxa in the round of sixteen match at the Azteca stadium.

"Malaka" who was given the nickname by a relative who lived in Greece, is happy with his transfer to Italy, but intends to move to a bigger club in the future.

Nacional also parted ways with centre back Diego Godin, who was confirmed the new signing of Villarreal earlier on Thursday.
