| AUSTRALIAN PROFESSOR CLAIMS ANCIENT HELLENES’ ORGIES A “MYTH” According to Professor Alaster Blansard of Sydney University, ancient Hellenes and Romans did not participate in orgies. With his study that was published in the University magazine, the British Historian is determined to abolish the “exotic” image Hellenes carried for 2,000 years and which owes its existence to other historians. “This myth”, says Mr Blansard, “has been created by Christian authors, who were outraged with the pagans’ liberality and sexual exaggerations. They “presented Rome as an empire that collapsed due to its lax morals”. The contemporaries, who adduced the ancient Hellenic and Roman orgies to legalize free love, preserved the myth. According to Mr Blansard, the ancient Hellenes’ habit to place genital organs almost everywhere, paint phalluses outside doors in order to exorcise the evil eye, put genitals on their knockers and on kitchen utensils meant nothing. “At that time, all this did not imply any eroticism. It is in contemporary times that they were perceived as sexual symbols”, insists Mr Blansard, who has been studying for years how contemporaries conceive and imagine the ancient world.

| Except for a few unsubstantiated cases amongst some royalty, there is no mention of a general practice of sex orgies in ancient Greece. Christian propagandizing, particularly through the Middle Ages is responsible for this misconception. Rome's less than stellar Caesars may have acted as degenerates but to label the people of Rome with the same tag is ludicrous.

| Look im not one to deny that ancient Greeks didnt have some wierd customs, but it doesnt take rocket science to see that the Chursh has basicaly laid there little contriversial eggs in about every aspect of the ancient greeks. It distirbs to see how much they have done so. It aint a conspiracy, its the simple undeniable truth of how far greed can take man. I mean your talking about a group of people ( church lambs) that ran around saying that aphrodites temple was a whore house??? Look im not going to deny they where very free spirited. Who's bussiness is it when they wanna have a groupie or same sex or whatever? But far from public orgies.....the church just wanted ti pain a living hell of these people. It is not easy explaining these things to ones who have tunnel vision, it takes time and plenty of study to seek truth. All i cann say is as modern Greeks we are far from what we use to be. NOt physicaly but mentaly. We have no LOGOS anymore. |
